7 WAYS TO BOOST SELF-ESTEEM
7 Ways to Boost Self-Esteem: My Journey to Embracing Myself
As a child, confidence radiated from me like sunshine; no one could bring me down. But as I grew up, everything changed. I remember vividly the first time my self-esteem took a hit—during class seven when a teacher made a comment about my changing body in front of my classmates. Their laughter echoed in my mind, planting seeds of doubt and embarrassment that would grow into years of insecurity.
Transitioning into adulthood was no easier. I found myself in a world where societal expectations loomed large. Surrounded by friends flaunting their perfect figures, I struggled to accept my body. The relentless pressure to conform left me feeling like I was falling short of the “ideal” image of beauty.
The Impact of Low Self-Esteem
Entering university, I had high hopes for socializing and making new friends. However, I quickly discovered that my low self-esteem made me retreat into solitude, relying only on my boyfriend for companionship. I felt invisible, suffocated by my own self-doubt. Each harsh comment from peers chipped away at my confidence, leaving me feeling like a shell of my former self.
At home, I faced another battle. Despite my love for my family, I often felt misunderstood. Comments that were meant to be light-hearted pierced through my heart, leaving me in tears at night, feeling utterly alone.
A Turning Point
It wasn't until I had a particularly hurtful encounter with a classmate that I decided enough was enough. The words “you look bad” stung deeply, making me avoid mirrors and photos alike. But with my boyfriend’s support, I slowly began to understand the importance of self-worth.
A poignant story I heard resonated with me deeply: A father gifted his son an old, rusty car. This car had seen better days, with dents and faded paint. The son was eager to sell it, so his father told him to take it to a used car lot. When he returned, he said, “They offered me $1,000 because it looks very worn out.”
The father then suggested taking the car to a pawn shop. After a visit, the son came back disappointed, stating, “The pawn shop offered $100 because it was a very old car.”
Unfazed, the father asked his daughter to take the car to a car club, known for appreciating vintage vehicles. When she returned, she was brimming with excitement, saying, “Some people at the club offered $100,000 for it since it’s a Nissan Skyline R34, an iconic car sought after by many enthusiasts!”
The father smiled and said, “You see, the right place values you the right way. If you are not valued, do not be angry; it simply means you are in the wrong place. Those who know your worth will appreciate you. Never stay in a place where no one sees your value.”
This story was a lightbulb moment for me. I realized that my worth isn't dictated by others’ opinions, especially those who fail to see my true potential. I vowed to keep my head high and appreciate those who recognize my value.
